Tips
Reviewing Your Homeowner Insurance Policy
The Dwelling Coverage amount on your homeowner
insurance policy should always be enough
to cover the replacement of your home after
a total loss, but should not exceed that
amount. If the dwelling coverage amount
is higher than the replacement cost of your
home then you are ‘over-insured’ and paying
higher premiums for more coverage than you
need. It is extremely important to annually
review your homeowners insurance policy
with your insurance agent to make sure that
you are neither over nor under-insured.
Things that can affect the value of your
home are the economy as it relates to cost
of building materials and market values,
as well as any changes to your home such
as home additions, kitchen modifications,
adding deck space or porches. If you make
any structural or cosmetic improvements
then you should notify your homeowner’s
insurance agent to make sure that the dwelling
amount on your homeowner insurance policy
reflects the new replacement value amount
of your home.
